What Makes an OE Quality Gas Discharge Bulb? Part2

Last week we discussed how the material quality of Filament (ThO2 vs. pure tungsten) and Metal Salt (Scandium and Sodium Iodide vs. low quality salts) influence bulb quality. Hope you find the information we sharing is helpful.
This week we are continuing our talk about bulb structure.

1. Glass Chamber

E-MARKD HID BULB

– Features :

  •  Inner chamber made of high temperature glass and an outer chamber sealed by a vacuum made of lower temperature glass but high UV blocking function.

– Effects:

  • The outer glass acts as a UV filter to remove the large amounts of UV radiation.
  • protect health & safe

 

NON-CERTIFIED HID BULBS

– Features :

  •  Low quality outer shielding or even normal glass with mercury to significantly save costs.

– Effects:

  • The UV radiation can blind you and/or give you a horrible burn.
  • Headlight projector becomes too hot and damagedresulting in uneven beam or even fire.

In conclusion, Non-certified HID cheap bulbs not only have less light output, less stable arc, less lifespan, etc., but also severely endanger health and safety.

Prepare yourself to pay between US$50 and US$100 for a certified/quality HID bulb.  It will definitely cost you much more, both substantially and invisibly, afterwards when you go for cheap and crap bulbs in the very beginning.  Price cannot be the only factor to consider when buying, especially buying something relative to health and safety.

What Makes an OE Quality Gas Discharge Bulb?

Unlike the conventional halogen bulbs, it is time to replace the OE HID bulbs on your vehicle headlamps when they’re not able to be turned on the very first time, “cold start” so to speak, due to high stress and voltages on startup, even if the bulbs can be ignited after trying to turn on and off in quick succession.
The phenomenon implies that you’re gambling your safety with the initial sign of failure. The bulbs are very likely to fail to work when you need to see.

The market is now crowded with extremely cheap HID bulbs.
The competing manufactures are underpricing in order to get orders and market
share.They use cheap material to reduce cost and do not follow specifications to
produce safety product.
We would like to share with you what to look for to replace the failed OE HID bulbs on the vehicle based on our long-term experience and expertise.

Part 1: Electrodes

Features Effects
E-MARKD HID BULBS 
Made from thoriated tungsten.
1-2% of the electrodes are made up of thorium dioxide (ThO2)
Benefit of ThO2 is that it has a more even heat profile and current flow which promotes a more stable arc across the salt gap. 
Makes the bulb last longer because the electrode is more robust.
ThO2 produces a more stable and consistent light output while putting minimal stress on the salts themselves.

NON-CERTIFIED HID BULBS 
Cheap bulbs generally are made of pure tungsten which is super cheap, and super crap. 
It erodes quickly, and the bulb life is short.
Light output can be “wavy” or inconsistent over temperature and/or time.
Less brighter with a tungsten electrodes.

Part 2 : Metal Salt (the HIDs heart)

Features Effects
E-MARKD HID BULBS 
The salt is the heart of your bulb and is used as fuel essentially.
OE HID bulbs are made of Scandium Iodide and Sodium Iodide.
Every company has a closely guarded recipe of salts to make the precise colours. 
Once the plasma is created and the salts are vapourized, the ballasts can drop the voltage to 85vac and generally it is +/- 17vac to keep the arc going steadily.
Creat more stable plasma and light output.

NON-CERTIFIED HID BULBS 
Low quality salts and/or salts cut with other materials.
The less salt in the chamber, the less salt vapour and the plasma is more unpredictable generally producing more heat and less light output. 
Poor quality metal salts to barely allow the plasma to form and are easily diluted.
These bulbs run hotter and again unevenly.

80% of “Philips” bulbs in the aftermarket are counterfeits / fakes.
Buyer beware.With rare exception, 80% or more of the “Philips” bulbs listings for new bulbs on eBay, Amazon and other locations are fake, Counterfeit look alike bulbs made in China. The Chinese have done a very “good” job to closely duplicate the labeling and the construction of the real Philips HID bulbs when making the fakes. 99.9% of people cannot tell the difference, in terms of appearance. We have purchased some of the fakes and will soon add some photos (High Resolution), comparing real with fakes. We will show you what to look for. This will help you determine that you are buying the real thing. This comparison will help all buyers and sellers to know what is a real Philips bulb. If we did not know what to look for we could be fooled too, the fakes are that “good” in appearance. HID bulbs claiming to be Philips and they come from China or some broker in USA (marked made in Germany), they are fakes. Likely some do not know that they are really selling fakes.

FAKE HID BULB not manufactured according to regulations would cause safety problems, for example,
1. Light Glare:The HID lights that you see on many of today’s cars are engineered by the manufacturers as complete lighting systems. This means that the lenses, bulbs, reflectors, housings, ballasts, and even the automatic adjusters and washers were all designed to work together in harmony to produce the best possible lighting under all conditions.If you use fake bulb,they usually produce a huge amount of unfocused light that is both blinding and dangerous to other drivers and pedestrians.

3. Short Lifespan: Fake HID bulbs typically last 500-1000 hours and frequently much less. They will damage your plastic headlight lenses and reflectors inside. UV light will yellow clear lenses over time. The fake bulbs do not have good UV (ultraviolet) light filtration by the outer glass tube on the bulb.

HOW DO YOU TELL REAL FROM FAKE?

A. E-MARK PRINTED CLEARLY & REGULARY ON THE BULB:

The above approval mark affixed to a gas-discharge light source indicates that the light source has been approved in Luxembourg (E13) under the approval code 012.
The first character of the approval code indicates that the approval was granted in accordance with the requirements of Regulation No. 99 in its original form.

C. CERTIFICATE SHALL BE APPROVED BASED ON REGULATION NO. 99.

Ask whoever provides HID for E-MARK certificate and look closely at it.
Only the regulation No. 99 for HID bulbs can be shown on it. (Approval of gas-discharge light sources.)
Other regulation such as No. 37 (Filament lamps) and No. 48 (Lighting and light-signalling devices) is not supposed to show on the certificate, as they are all irrelevant.
